While most people go to Cambodia to visit the Angkor Temples in Siem Reap there are places to hide off the beaten tourist route to find a young traveller. In Cambodia, this includes the route from Siem Reap – to Phnom Penh – to Sihanoukville to explore the most sparsely populated areas in Cambodia.

It is possible to navigate the tracks and roads along the river north from village to village. The famous bicycle trail for a 30-mile trek from Kratie up to Campi to visit the rare Irrawaddy dolphins.

Northwest of the Mekong River are the Rattanakari and Mondulkiri provinces, the Banlung Rattanakari area has a growing reputation as a hiking trail around crater lakes and numerous waterfalls around the region. Waterfalls can be seen flowing all year round. The area also has a National Park to the north and Kumphat Wildlife Sanctuary south of Banlung.

Rattanakiri jungle

Travelling from the Rattanakiri jungle to the highlands of Mondulkiri offers the visitor a solid sense of self-sacrifice. Options include a three-day elephant trek although the hillsides are dense jungle, a visit to the tribal valleys, and capturing spectacular waterfalls. Bou Sraa Waterfall is very popular in Cambodia.

Moving to the South of the country along the coast improves the next voyage. Apart from the safest swimming beaches, there are a few PADI accredited centers based in Sihanoukville. They can cater for any surfing adventure from snorkelling trips to scuba diving for beginners to more experienced divers. There are islands in the Gulf of Thailand with coral reefs that support many species of marine animals that will satisfy the desire of all visitors.
